Unfortunately, the whole world are under the effect of this fast spreading virus epidemic called Covid-19. While about 80% of those who are affected by this virus infection escape lightly, around 15% displayed serious symptoms, and about 5% need intensive care. The average death rate from this disease is around 2-3%.
As we all know, pregnancy is a critical process. The immune systems of pregnant women is somewhat suppressed. This causes pregnant women to become more sensitive to infections.
How should our pregnant ladies act during this pandemic? First of all, they should create the conditions for working from home. And they should keep social distancing with family members who have contact with the outside. They should not sit at crowded dinner tables, keep a distance of 1.5 meters with the others at home, and, if possible, sleep in a separate bed.
In our country, one death connected to Covid-19 during pregnancy has been reported. Unfortunately, the baby of this pregnant woman also lost its life due to premature birth complications. There are no babies infected in the mother’s womb during pregnancy. Like in any infection, fever, difficulty in breathing and advanced infection symptoms may increase the risk for miscarriage or premature birth. Therefore, pregnant women who suffer from stubborn cough, fever, loss of taste and breathing difficulties should immediately apply to health institutes. Most of the medicines used in the treatment of this disease can comfortably be used during pregnancies, have no adverse effects in the baby, and provide successful treatments.
Pregnancy is a progress requiring regular control and examination. Therefore pregnant women must regularly continue their controls. I recommend refraining from using public transport vehicles if possible while going to the doctor for control, and regularly to use masks. If the hospitals where the controls are to be made are large pandemic hospitals where Covid-19 patients are treated, they should prefer small hospitals where infection patients are not hospitalized. Postponing pregnancy controls due to fear of infection could lead to irrecoverable results. During this period one should keep close contact with one’s doctor and carry out plans according to his/her recommendations.
In daily life, a well-balanced diet, vegetables and fruit rich in Vitamin C, and plenty of liquids are important. Sufficient and good quality sleep is important for the immune system. We recommend fresh air and sunshine from a balcony or window for 20-30 minutes per day if the temperature is suitable.
In our hospitals surgical ventures and operations that are not urgent can usually be postponed. The one thing ,we do not and will not, postpone are pregnancy controls and deliveries.
To couples who are planning new pregnancies, I would recommend to wait for the passing of this chaotic time, and for the lessening of the speed of this infection to spread, and to postpone their plans for several months.
